‘This announcement recognises the amazing contribution our colleagues make in serving local communities across the country’.
Staff at Aldi UK are due to receive their second pay rise this year as the supermarket aims to recognise “the amazing contribution” of its workers.
Around 26,000 store colleagues will be rewarded with the wage increase as the business aims to maintain its position as “the UK’s best-paying supermarket”.
From September this year, all hourly-paid workers will pocket an increase of 40p an hour on their current hourly rate, taking Aldi’s minimum pay rates for store assistants to £10.50 an hour nationally and £11.95 for employees inside the M25.
These new rates also exceed the Living Wage Foundation’s recommended real Living Wage of £9.90 an hour nationally and £11.05 inside the M25.
Giles Hurley, chief executive officer of Aldi UK and Ireland, explained: “Our new rates of pay maintain Aldi’s position as the UK’s highest paying supermarket.
“This announcement recognises the amazing contribution our colleagues make in serving local communities across the country. Their outstanding efforts have ensured that our customers continue to have access to fresh affordable food, every single day.”
In addition to the pay increase, Aldi continues to offer its staff paid breaks, which for the average store colleague is now worth more than £830 a year.
‘Rewarded for amazing work’
In February this year the supermarket chain rolled out a pay increase which saw workers’ wages rise to at least £10.10 an hour.
At the time, the employer shared that workers will receive £10.10 an hour nationally and £11.55 for those inside the M25.
Financial rewards
Other businesses have also handed out pay rises to reward their staff, including Pret a Manger and Sainsbury’s.
For example, earlier this year Sainsbury’s shared it will be increasing its basic hourly rate of pay for all Sainsbury’s and Argos store colleagues from £9.50 to £10 an hour, adding that it would come into effect from 6th March.
Meanwhile, sandwich chain Pret revealed in January this year that 6,900 team members will see their pay rise to over £10 an hour.
